"Vanuatu's beef industry enjoys a benign subtropical environment well suited to extensive pasture fed farming systems. Vanuatu also enjoys a fortunate animal health status with no significant production limiting diseases for cattle, and recognition that it is free of such important cattle diseases as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), rinderpest, foot and mouth disease, bovine tuberculosis and bovine brucellosis.

In having a developed beef export industry Vanuatu is unique amongst the pacific islands. The industry is well regulated and has proven itself to be successful in exporting beef to overseas markets with stringent import and quality standards such as Australia, Japan, New Zealand and New Caledonia.

The responsibility for ensuring Vanuatu's animal health and meat processing standards are maintained, and that importing countries specific hygiene standards are met, lies with the Vanuatu Government's Livestock & Quarantine Department. This department is staffed with New Zealand and Australian trained veterinarians, and New Zealand trained meat inspection staff. All meat exports are subject to quality control and meat inspection systems operated under the supervision of these staff.

Vanuatu hopes to continue to use its fortunate animal health status and the recognition of its export meat certification systems to improve its market access options in the coming years. The stated policy aim is to ultimately be able to export Vanuatu beef to all the major import markets in the world."
